Huskies win Abitibi battle 6-3 against Foreurs

Antonin Verreault scored two goals and added two assists against the Val-d’Or Foreurs on Monday, and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies easily won the first set of the season’s Battle of Abitibi-Témiscamingue 6-3.

Evan Courtois also lit the red light twice, while Ty Higgins and Thomas Verdon each managed to do so once. Samuel Meloche stopped 23 shots.

This is a third straight loss for the Foreurs. Samuel Fiala, Alix Durocher and Donovan Arsenault threaded the needle in this one. Nathan Baril was an accomplice to two of them.

Cedric Massé gave up five shots on 40 in the loss.

The two clubs will meet again on October 27 in Val-d’Or. Last season, the Huskies won seven of the 10 meetings.

Ramparts 2 – Armada 5

Xavier Villeneuve and Justin Carbonneau scored twice and the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada defeated the Quebec Remparts 5-2 at the Centre d’excellence Sports Rousseau.

Villeneuve also got an assist. Théo Lemieux was the other goal scorer for the local favourites. Vincent Gladu recorded his second win in as many outings this season with an 18-save performance.

Jayden Rousseau and Justin Côté scored in the Remparts’ second straight loss. Nathan Quinn had two assists and Patrick Deniger stopped 23 shots.

Xavier Lebel was ejected from the game, receiving a major penalty for giving away boards with 62 seconds left. Matt Gosselin, who threw his gloves on the sequence, also received a game misconduct.

Olympics 1 – Cataracts 3

The Gatineau Olympiques suffered an eighth defeat in eight games, this time losing 3-1 to the Cataractes in Shawinigan.

The visitors had started the game with a goal at 5:35 of the first period, courtesy of Jérémie Minville. Chad Lygitsakos, Julien Lanthier and Félix Lacerte, however, beat Kian Hodgins, who was targeted 32 times, to change the pace of the game.

Félix Hamel signed the victory with 30 saves.

Islanders 1 – Wildcats 5

Keegan Warren made 29 saves in Moncton, helping the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory over the Charlottetown Islanders.

Julius Sumpf scored twice, Gabe Smith, Markus Vidicek and Preston Lounsbury scored in the Wildcats’ fourth straight victory.

Marcus Kearsey replied for the Islanders, who are last in the Eastern Conference standings.

The Wildcats have won all three meetings between the two teams so far this campaign.
