Blue Jackets pay tribute to Gaudreau brothers in Columbus
The Blue Jackets raised a banner with Johnny Gaudreau’s name and his number 13 high above their arena on Tuesday, paying tribute to the star player and his brother Matthew.
The brothers were killed when they were struck and killed while riding their bicycles on August 29 in New Jersey, the day before their sister Katie’s wedding.
The Blue Jackets left the left wing position empty for the opening faceoff.
Then 13 seconds were left to fade away on the clock, in honor of the man who was cut down at age 31. Matthew was 29.
On the hockey side, Sam Reinhart scored a goal and three points as the Florida Panthers got the last laugh against the Blue Jackets, 4-3.
Reinhart leads the team with four goals this season. This time, he made it 3-2 Panthers with two seconds left in the middle period.
Florida remained in control afterward.
Winning goaltender Spencer Knight made 35 saves, 17 more than Elvis Merzlikins.
Wild 4 – Blues 1
Goaltender Filip Gustavsson scored an empty-net goal to cap the Minnesota Wild’s 4-1 victory over the Blues in St. Louis.
Gustavsson, who also made 27 saves, calmly took a Blues clearance before putting the puck down the ice and taking a chance. The Wild were playing on the power play.
The 26-year-old Swede became the 15th goalie to score in the National Hockey League (NHL). Martin Brodeur and Ron Hextall have three and two goals respectively to their record. The last to achieve this was Tristan Jarry, on November 30, 2023 with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Special teams were at the heart of the Wild’s victory. Ryan Hartman opened the scoring with an extra man, while Jakub Lauko doubled the visitors’ lead on a penalty kill. Marco Rossi also scored in the win.
The Wild have yet to lose in regulation in four games (2-0-2).
Quebecer Mathieu Joseph threaded the needle for the first time in a Blues uniform. Jordan Binnington failed three times on 26 shots.
Golden Knights 2 – Capitals 4
Alexander Ovechkin became the 60th player in NHL history to reach 700 assists in the Capitals’ 4-2 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Washington.
Ovechkin, who moved from left wing to right wing for the game, had two goals. He has 853 goals and 1,553 points in 1,428 career games.
Sidney Crosby (1,007), Patrick Kane (814), Evgeni Malkin (804), Anze Kopitar (795), Nicklas Backstrom (762) and Claude Giroux (716) are the only other active players with 700 assists.
Jakub Vrana, Tom Wilson, Aliaksei Protas and Jakob Chychrun lit the red light for the Capitals, who posted their first win in two outings this season.
The Capitals handed the net to Logan Thompson after a rough first game from former Montreal Canadiens goaltender Charlie Lindgren. Against his former team, Thompson made 24 saves. Only Victor Olofsson and Jack Eichel beat him.
Tested 22 times, Adin Hill gave up four. This is the first defeat for the Nevada team in four games.
Canucks 1 – Lightning 4
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves to help the Lightning to a 4-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks in Tampa.
Vasilevskiy also had a 20-save performance against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday in Raleigh, making the Florida club perfect through two games.
Vasilevskiy has a 295-143-30 record in 11 NHL seasons.
Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point scored in the Lightning’s second straight game. Anthony Cirelli also scored and Brandon Hagel added an empty-net goal.
Conor Garland answered the Canucks’ power play in the third period, cutting the deficit to two goals.
Arturs Silovs started the second game for the Canucks and allowed three goals on 27 shots. The team is still looking for its first win after losing two tiebreaker games to open the season.
Devils 2 – Hurricanes 4
Jackson Blake scored his first NHL goal and the Hurricanes earned their first win of the season, beating the New Jersey Devils 4-2 in Raleigh.
The son of former Bettman player Jason Blake, Jackson was the 109th overall pick in the 2021 draft. It was his third career game.
Jack Hughes scored the first goal of the game, putting the Devils ahead. Seth Jarvis and Shayne Gostisbehere replied before the end of the first period and the Hurricanes never looked back.
Sebastian Aho was the other scorer for the Hurricanes. Pyotr Kochetkov kept the home favourites ahead by stopping 23 shots.
Nico Hischier also scored for the Devils, who have won four of their first six games of the season. Jacob Markstrom allowed three goals on 33 shots.
Kraken 7 – Predators 3
The Seattle Kraken scored four unanswered goals in the third period to beat the Predators 7-3 in Nashville.
Jared McCann, Jaden Schwartz, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Adam Larsson all had a goal and an assist. Ryker Evans, Brandon Tanev and Jordan Eberle also scored, while Chandler Stephenson had two assists in the win.
In his second start of the season, Joey Daccord maintained his perfect record with 30 saves.
Michael McCarron, Tommy Novak and Brady Skjei kept the game close by scoring in the first 40 minutes of play. The score was 3-3 heading into the final period.
Juuse Saros was the target of 34 shots, stopping 28 of them.
Sharks 2 – Stars 3
Jason Robertson, Matt Duchene and Wyatt Johnston all scored in the shootout and the Stars won 3-2 against the San Jose Sharks in Dallas.
Duchene and Roope Hintz had the Stars on the board before overtime. Jake Oettinger made 25 saves and Texas won its first four games of the season.
Tyler Toffoli and Ty Dellandrea both broke the tie for the Sharks, who picked up their second point in three games without tasting a win.
After facing 40 shots in his first start of the campaign, Mackenzie Blackwood was the target of 38 shots this time.
William Eklund participated in a 100th career match on the Bettman circuit.
Blackhawks 1 – Flames 3
Andrei Kuzmenko scored the winning goal on a power play in the second period and the Flames kept their clean sheet with a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in Calgary.
Matt Coronato scored twice, the second into an empty net. Dustin Wolf earned the win with 31 saves.
After a difficult 2023-24 season, Quebecer Jonathan Huberdeau is off to an excellent start to the campaign. He added an assist on Tuesday, giving him three goals and six points in four games.
Nick Foligno scored the lone goal for the Blackhawks. Connor Bedard was held off the scoresheet. Petr Mrazek stopped 23 shots for the visitors.
