Swedish prosecutors investigate ‘rape’ after Mbappé visit
The Swedish prosecutor’s office confirmed on Tuesday that it was conducting a rape investigation following the visit of Kylian Mbappé and his entourage last week to Stockholm, without however naming names, but the player’s lawyer claims that he has “nothing to reproach himself for”.
According to Swedish media, the star is at the heart of the investigations.
Kylian Mbappé is “stunned” to see his name cited in connection with a rape investigation, but he is “calm” because “he has nothing to reproach himself for”, the lawyer for the captain of the French team, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, told AFP on Tuesday .
Ms. Canu-Bernard also indicated that she was going to “file a complaint for malicious denunciation […] because it is impossible to allow yourself to be slandered and defamed in this way.”
Asked by AFP, the plaintiff’s lawyer refused to comment on this threat of a complaint.
On Monday, after initial information about this investigation, Mbappé denounced “fake news” on social networks, making a link with the hearing concerning his financial dispute with PSG which was held on Tuesday in Paris.
After reporting his two-day trip to Stockholm, two Swedish tabloids, Aftonbladet and Expressen, claim that the French striker is the subject of a rape investigation. Public television channel SVT also reports this suspicion.
The Swedish justice system remains cautious: an investigation for “rape” is underway, the public prosecutor’s office said on Tuesday in response to this information, without citing names.
“Following the publication in the media of [information about] a suspected rape in Stockholm, the prosecutor can confirm that a complaint of rape has been received by the police” and that “an investigation” is underway, the prosecution said in a statement.
According to Expressen, the French striker is considered “reasonably suspicious” in this preliminary investigation, the lowest level of suspicion provided for by Swedish law.
There are two levels of suspicion in the Swedish judicial system: “reasonably suspicious” and “probably suspicious.” The first, the weaker of the two, only exceptionally leads to pretrial detention, while the second is generally a prerequisite for detention, according to the prosecutor’s website.
Mbappé’s lawyer, however, told AFP that she did not know whether the investigation opened in Stockholm for rape targeted the Real Madrid striker, as reported by Aftonbladet and Expressen.
“We read the press. The Stockholm public prosecutor’s office issued a statement but it does not allow us to know whether Kylian Mbappé is the target. I therefore have no information allowing me to confirm whether this is indeed a complaint filed against him,” explained Mr. Canu -Bernard.
According to a legal document consulted by AFP, the events took place on Thursday, October 10 in a Stockholm hotel, the Bank Hotel — where the star and his entourage were staying, the two Swedish newspapers report.
A pair of black trousers, a top and a pair of panties were seized by police, according to new information published by Expressen on Tuesday.
Upscale club
The French superstar and his family spent 48 hours, from Wednesday to Friday, in Stockholm and left Sweden on Friday afternoon aboard a private jet from Bromma airport, on the outskirts of the capital.
According to Aftonbladet, police received the complaint on Saturday, after the alleged victim received treatment.
Asked by AFP, his lawyer, Petra Eklund, responded in a written message: “I cannot comment at this stage.”
Mbappé was with a group of people at the Chez Jolie restaurant in the Swedish capital on Thursday evening before heading to the V club, Aftonbladet revealed.
In this posh club in the capital, the player and his friends had privatized a room where around thirty people were invited.
Dispute
“FAKE NEWS!!!! It’s becoming so predictable, just before a hearing, as luck would have it,” the Real Madrid player protested on social network X on Monday, establishing a link between the first article in Aftonbladet and the hearing held on Tuesday afternoon before a committee of the Professional Football League (LFP) in the financial dispute between him and Paris Saint-Germain.
The former Parisian striker is demanding 55 million euros in unpaid wages and other bonuses from his former club.
The LFP’s joint appeals committee will give its decision on October 25, a source close to PSG told AFP.
